Today is not just Christmas, it is the birthday of Atal Behari Vajpayee, one of independent India’s three finest PMs.

The second was the man featured in this post Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao. He died 11 short years ago on 23rd Dec.

How apt that ABV and PVN were the greatest of friends. They had much in common with each other:  both poets, philosophers, erudite, liberal, friendly to their foes, humble to a fault, tolerant, inclusive…. They were above pettiness. Like the lotus, they transcended the mud around them!

And yes, these traits were also present in a man who is much derided today, but was the third in my trio. Jawaharlal Nehru. What a pity that his terrible family, from his daughter downward,  have resulted in his great legacy being tarnished and dragged into the mud.

And what a pity that the parties that these three men created and were part of, celebrate the very opposite values of what they stood for. Across the  political system with ZERO exceptions, our leaders, whether they be from the BJP, Congress or any of the regional parties or AAP,  display  total meanness of spirit, have idolised and elevated idiocy and anti-scholarliness to a new high, are filled with narcissistic ignoramuses, are divisive, petty and filled with rancour, corrupt to their core….

But enough cavilling and complaining. Instead, let us celebrate the greatest among us today.

This Christmas day, India and Indians need to think and behave like ABV, PVN and JLN would have done.

May your spirit somehow miraculously infuse Indians. May your wisdom, your ideas and your ideals be resurrected and celebrated.
